Story:
Once there was a little girl who loved to play in the cellar in her basement. She loved the smell of the damp earth and the coolness of the room. One day, she was playing in the cellar with a very powerful magnet. She accidently dropped her magnet and when she went to retrieve it, she was surprised to see it covered in a bunch of black fuzzy things. When she showed her mother, the girl was told that the fuzzy things were tiny bits of iron, so small that she had never noticed them before. It took something like the magnet that she was playing with to make the iron particles visible to her eye.
Quote
Henry Ward Breecher stated: If one should give me a dish of sand and tell me there were particles of iron itit, I might look for the with my eye and search for them with my clumsy fingers, and be unable to detect them; but let me take a magnet and sweep through it, and it would draw to itself the almost invisible particles, but the mere power of attraction! The un-thankful heart, like my finger in the sand, discovers no mercies, but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find in every hour some heavenly blessings.
Scripture - D&C 59:21
And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments.
It is important that we get in the habit of having a grateful heart and looking for the blessings the Lord gives us. Sometimes seeing the Lords hand in our lives takes work and effort.
Hold up the word picture across the room from the kids. Ask them “what words do you see here? What blessing do you see written on this page? (our life) That is right. Because of the Lord, and the sacrifice the Saviour made for us, we have a life in which to enjoy. Some people do not realize that everything they are blessed with is due to the Atonement.

Story:
A younger man was listening to an older man tell experience he had when he was 12 years old “ I was asked to bring the family herd of horses up to the pasture to be fed. As we were climbing the rocky path something spooked the horses and they all ran away. I was so worried” the man continued” so I immediately knelt down and prayed that Heavenly Father would help me get my horses back. As soon as I finished praying a bunch of men came out of the bushes and brought all the horses back.” Pausing the old man looked at the younger man and said “It was that day I stopped believing in God” The younger man was astounded and asked how that was possible after the Lord had just answered his prayers. The older man emphatically answered “God did not help me, it was those men that helped me.”
This man, as incredible as it sounds, did not recognize the obvious hand of the Lord that day he knelt and prayed for help.
Hold up the word picture again and ask someone to come up to come closer and see what they can see, finally ask them to take a magnify glass and see if they can see any more words. Tell them”Our lives are like this picture. It is made up of so many blessings. Unfortunately , some people do not recognize God’s hand in their lives. Instead they ignore or explain away God’s hand in their lives.
Activity: Give your kids a small gratitude journal or share one family gratitude journal. Challenge your kids to record at least three different blessings they enjoyed that day. If they have their own journals each, let them decorate them by using stickers, magazines or graphics from our graphic page
