Jesus Is The Light Of The World
Supplies
- Blindfold.
- Flashlight with the batteries removed
Activity:
Blindfold a volunteer. Ask them to come to the front and with a marker, have them draw their family. Ask another person to come on and draw a house for the family. Continue this activity with different people drawing different things until appropriate to stop (some families will have to let all the children try).
Ask: Was this activity difficult? Why or why not?
Most people know that life on Earth would cease to exist without light. If the sun were to die, not only would we be left in a world of darkness, we would also lack the essential elements needed to survive.
Being able to see is a great gift. Some people do not have this gift and they live in a world of physical darkness. While it may be difficult at first to become blind. Most physically blind people are able to live a full and happy life. Unfortunately there are many people in this world who live in a different kind of darkness-spiritual darkness.
Jesus who is the Light of the World, brings life and light to the spiritual body of mankind and the physical world we live in.
Before plants and animals were created, God created Light, because without light nothing can live. Without light reflecting off objects, we would also be unable to see. An unrepentant man is in a state of darkness.
Jesus says:
Without the “light of World” we would be unable to see our selves as we really are. Our sins, as well as all the joys and colors God has prepared for us, would be unseen by the unrepentant. This darkness does not mean that those joys and sins do not exist, it just means we are unable to see them for what they are because there is no light reflecting upon them. Jesus is here to do that, and a whole lot more.

Scriptures: John 8:12 (KJV) & Matthew 5:14-16
12: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
14-16: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and gloritfy your Father which is in heaven.

Activity:
Hold up your flashlight that has all the batteries removed and is stuffed with junk.
This Flashlight is like us. God has sent us to earth with the command to “let our light so shine”
If we want to let our light so shine like the Saviour, we need to do the things that he does. The more we emulate the Saviour, the lighter our lives will be. This does not mean that we will be free from hardship and pain, it just means that even though we are having these pains, we will be able to experience joy.
Get someone to try and turn on the light. Pass the flash light around and ask:
Can anyone tell me why this light will not work? (hopefully someone will try opening the flashlight and see that the batteries are missing.
The batteries represent the commandments. When we choose to fill up our lives with junk instead of the acts of God we can not shine the way we were meant to shine.

Story:
I recently recalled a historic meeting in Jerusalem about 17 years ago. It was regarding the lease for the land on which the Brigham Young University’s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies was later built. Before this lease could be signed, President Ezra Taft Benson and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, then president of Brigham Young University, agreed with the Israeli government on behalf of the Church and the university not to proselyte in Israel. You might wonder why we agreed not to proselyte. We were required to do so in order to get the building permit to build that magnificent building which stands in the historic city of Jerusalem. To our knowledge the Church and BYU have scrupulously and honorably kept that non-proselyting commitment. After the lease had been signed, one of our friends insightfully remarked, “Oh, we know that you are not going to proselyte, but what are you going to do about the light that is in their eyes?” He was referring to our students who were studying in Israel.
We need to keep that light in our eyes and shine forth so that we will not only be able to enjoy a rich and full life, but that we will also be able tot lead others to Christ. As we do thins, our testimony of the Saviour will increase.
