Story
Emily Freeman remembers being young and helping her father herd the family sheep. She loved her sheep and especially remembered one called “Big Mama”. Each spring lambs and sheep would be sold and bought, through all the selling and buying “Big Mama” stayed. She loved Emily’s dad, and her dad love Big Mama. It didn’t matter where Big Mama was, whenever Emily’s dad called Big Mama, using a unique bleating noise, Big Mama would come, leading the rest of the flock with her.
One day the sheep got loose and mixed with a neighbors flock. Unfortunately neither flock was marked and the thought of figuring out who’s sheep was who’s gave the neighbour a head ache. Luckily Emily’s dad had the answer. Standing up in the back of his truck Emily’s dad call Big Mama. Emily relates “I wish you could have seen the look on that farmers face. The fist and second calls were followed by silence. . . I wondered how important my dad would be to Big Mama now. But my dad wasn’t worried—he kept calling. And finally, from the back corner of the field there was the familiar reply. My dad repeated the call loudly and consistently as Big Mama made her way through the huge flock, followed by our other lambs. The farmer watched in amazement and then helped us load our sheep into the back of the truck so that we could take them home.”

- How did Emily’s Father find his sheep?
- Was the relationship between Big Mama and Emily’s Father strong? How can you tell?
- What would have happened if Big Mama did not know the voice of her Shepherd?
Activity
Give all of your children something to make noise with, a bell, a pot, spoons ect. . . Blindfold one person and ask them to find the treat that you have put in the room. While the blind folded person is looking for the treat, get each of the children to make noise with their object. After a few minutes tell the person blindfolded by which noise they will find the treat (eg. The treat is beside the person ringing the bell). Now see if it is easier for the blindfolded person to find the treat.
Ask:
Ask:
- Why was it easier to find the treat the second time.
- How is finding the treat like following the Saviours voice?
- If you don’t know the sound of the Saviours voice will it be hard to follow him?
- How can we learn to recognize the Saviours voice?
